Fan Zeng, a famous contemporary Chinese scholar, painter and poet, was born in Nantong, Jiangsu, in July 5, 1938. He studied history, literature and painting from childhood, and was admitted to the History Department of Nankai University in Tianjin in 1959. Two years later, he transferred to the Central Academy of fine arts to study art history. After six months, he transferred to Chinese painting department and graduated in 1962. He has successively learned from Wu Zuoren, Li Keran, Jiang Zhaohe, Li Kuchan and Liu Lingcang. Fan Zeng is good at Chinese figure painting, and has long poetry and calligraphy. He advocated painting with the essence of Shi Tao's theory of painting, pursuing the sounds of nature, being good at white drawing, and especially fond of freehand brushwork.
