OCTOBER 2025 AUCTION

The Yongzheng reign (1723–1735) is considered as one of the most brilliant periods of Qing imperial porcelain.  Building upon the firm foundations laid during the Kangxi era, porcelain production under Yongzheng reached the pinnacle of refinement and elegance.  The Yongzheng Emperor, renowned as a ruler of subtle taste and cultivated sophistication, personally favored works of understated beauty executed with the utmost technical perfection.  As a result, porcelains of this period are celebrated as the embodiment of imperial grace and artistry.
The famille-rose (fencai) technique flourished during this short reign.  Compared with Kangxi porcelains, Yongzhengfencai features more delicate brushwork, a pastel palette of refined tones, and soft powdery colors that create a lifelike and naturalistic effect.  It is recognized as one of the most representative ceramic innovations of the dynasty.

This bowl depicts the “blessing and longevity” (fushou) motif – a traditional Chinese auspicious symbol representing happiness and long life.  The peaches are painted plump and radiant, their coloration transitioning from rose-pink to white, green, and pale yellow, harmonized with gracefully entwined branches and leaves.  In Chinese culture, the word peach (tao) is a homophone for longevity (shou), reinforcing the symbolic wishes for enduring fortune and prosperity embodied in this design.

On the base appears the reign mark “Da Qing Yongzheng Nian Zhi” (Made in the Yongzheng reign of the Great Qing), affirming its imperial status.  Notably, because the Yongzheng reign lasted a mere twelve years, surviving examples of Yongzheng imperial wares are exceptionally rare, with each piece treasured as a cultural and artistic gem.
As observed by Rose Kerr – former Curator of Chinese Ceramics at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London:“Yongzheng famille-rose porcelains display a refinement and unparalleled elegance in Chinese ceramics, transcending mere decoration to embody the courtly aesthetics and cultivating the taste of the emperor himself.”
Thus, this famille-rose peach-and-longevity bowl is not only an imperial vessel of daily use, but also a masterpiece of courtly elegance, reflecting the distinctive aesthetic spirit of the Yongzheng era and representing one of the high points in the history of Qing imperial porcelain.
