過去的文人雅士或貴族婦女，在讀書寫字、彈琴撫箏、品茗弈棋的時候，喜歡焚一爐香，用以增添風雅的意趣，同時又可以淨化室內的空氣。而且會根據不同季節和環境，焚燒不同的香，如夏秋時節，多焚天然木香；冬春之際，則燒用香料粉末加上其他材料製成的煉香。為了不使香的精油揮發，香氣走散，於是就有了專門用於盛香的小型容器，稱之為香筒。此小小的香筒，匯用老象牙雕刻，精美別致，充滿雅趣，造型別致精巧的香盒，是置於書齋案頭，用以顯示情趣品位的最佳器物。
