此作品是因徐悲鸿年少丧父时无钱办丧事，幸得一位厨师帮助，为答谢厨师，少年徐悲鸿创作了《和合二仙》，此画凝集着徐悲鸿对父亲的挚爱和孝心。“和合二仙”是中国民间传说中的神，也被称为“团圆之神”，是我国民间的爱神。象征家人之和合，生活之美满。徐悲鸿此画有着同样的吉祥寄寓。出身贫寒且经历丧父之痛的他，于笔墨中倾注了很多个人情感，画面中自然地流露着对美好生活的向往与祝福之情。
