莲华生大师，印度佛教史上最伟大的大成就者之一，藏传佛教的主要奠基者。公元八世纪，应藏王赤松德赞迎请入藏弘法，成功创立了西藏第一座佛、法、僧三宝齐全的佛教寺院——桑耶寺。他教导藏族弟子学习译经，从印度迎请无垢友等大德入藏，将重要显密经论译成藏文，创建显密经院及密宗道场，开创了在家出家的两种圣者应供轨范，如是等等，奠定了西藏佛教的基础，艺术价值极高。
四臂观音是雪域西藏的守护神，造型优美，他一头四臂，身色洁白如月，黑发结顶髻，头戴花蔓宝冠，表情呈慈悲像。主臂两手于胸前结合掌印，另外两手之右手持水晶念珠，左手拈八瓣白莲花，以菩萨慧眼凝视众生，凡被其观者尽得解脱。结跏趺坐于莲花月轮上，象征伟大的慈心与悲心。如修此尊，易得佛力，实现后生投生极乐世界的愿望。
